The Spitfires インタビューその①

みなさん、こんにちは。英国政府観光庁日本担当のアシュレイ・ハーヴィです。

今回は注目の若手ブリティッシュバンド「ザ・スピットファイアズ（The Spitfires）」のヴォーカル、ビリーのインタビューをお届けします。

Q.1 What were your first childhood memories of British music?

Q.1 幼い頃初めて聴いたブリティッシュ・ミュージックの思い出は？

A.1　My first memories were probably Oasis on Top Of The Pops. My dad was/is very keen on music so I constantly had it surrounding me the whole time I was growing up. Even from a young age I became interested in playing an instrument.

A.1　オアシスを音楽番組トップ・オブ・ザ・ポップスで観たのが最初の記憶だと思います。父は昔から大の音楽ファンだったので（今も変わりません）、幼いときから音楽に囲まれて育ちました。おかげでずいぶん早くから楽器を演奏したいと思っていました。

Q.2 When did you first pick up an instrument and who were your British inspirations at that time?

Q.2 それはいくつのときですか？その当時好きだったバンドは？

A.2 I had just turned 8 when I started guitar lessons at my primary school. Which was around the time I also discovered The Jam who I literally became obsessed with. I was also into Ocean Colour Scene, Oasis as well as bands like Madness and The Specials.

A.2 八歳のとき小学校でギターレッスンを始めました。同じ時期にザ・ジャムの音楽と出会い、心底のめり込んでいました。オーシャン・カラー・シーンやオアシス、マッドネスやザ・スペシャルズも大好きでした。

Q.3 Can you tell us a little about how you came to form The Spitfires?

Q.3 ザ・スピットファイアズを立ち上げるまでの経緯を教えてください。

A.3 It’s actually an incredibly boring story of how we formed. I had been in a band previously and was looking for new musicians to play with. Sam and Matt were just met through friends.

A.3 バンド結成の裏話は実はすごくつまらないんですよ。僕は他のバンドに所属していたんですが、新しいミュージシャンを探していたんです。サムとマットは共通の友達を介して知り合ったばかりでした。

Q.4 The area of Britain you live in is relatively unknown to the Japanese. Can you let us know what places you would recommend Japanese travelers to visit and why?

Q.4 君の地元は日本人には馴染みがないようだけど、日本から訪れる人たちにお勧めの観光スポットを教えてください。

I live in Watford, which is just outside of London which is just a typical suburban town – however I’m a 20 minute train journey from Euston (North London). I’d recommend Camden Town for the musical history, canal and market. The west end and Soho for shopping and eating.

A.4僕はウォトフォードに住んでいます。ロンドンのはずれの、典型的な郊外地です。でも電車でたったの20分で北ロンドンのユーストン駅へ出られるので、そこから近いカムデン・タウンで音楽の歴史を体験したり、リージェンツ運河やマーケットに行くのをお勧めします。

ショッピングや食事には中心地のウエスト・エンドやソーホーがいいですね。

Q.5 You all have a very distinctive style of dress. What are your favourite (British) brands and why.

Q.5君のバンドのメンバーはみんな、ファッションにこだわりがありますね。好きな（イギリスの）ブランドは？

A.5I've always, from a young age, loved Fred Perry and Ben Sherman. Both because the music I am into. The bands I like wear these two labels which instinctively made me want to wear them. Same for Baracuta, Merc and Brutus Trimfit.

A.5昔からずっとフレッド・ペリーとベン・シャーマンは大好きで、そのわけは音楽です。僕が好きなバンドが着ているブランドだから、自然に真似するようになりました。同じ理由で、バラクータ、メルク、ブルータス・トリムフィットも好きです。

Q.6 What’s your favourite place in Britain and why?

Q.6 イギリスで一番好きな場所は？

A.6 My favourite place is Soho. It’s an incredibly lively place, also very colourful. Steeped in history.
