Q.1 - What were your first childhood memories of British music
幼い頃初めて聴いたブリティッシュ・ミュージックの思い出は？
It was seeing Marc Bolan and David Bowie on Top of the Pops, they seemed like Aliens from a different planet, I was very young and impressionable and that world just seemed so fascinating to me. It was years later when I started going to gigs that my obsession and passion for music came to the fore by going to see bands of my own generation such as The Jam, the Specials, The Police, Squeeze, Dexys Midnight Runners etc…..
マーク・ボランとデヴィッド・ボウイを音楽番組トップ・オブ・ザ・ポップスで観たことです。まるでどこかの惑星から現れた宇宙人のようでした。僕はすごく小さかったし感受性が強かったから、彼らの魅せる世界にめちゃくちゃ感動したのを覚えています。音楽にのめり込むようになったのはそれから何年もあと、ライブを観にいくようになってからです。僕たちの世代のバンドで、例えばザ・ジャム、スペシャルズ、ポリス、スクィーズ、デキシーズ・ミッドナイト・ランナーズといった……
Q.2 When did you first pick up an instrument and who were your British inspirations at that time?
楽器に初めて触れたのはいくつのとき？そのとき影響を受けたブリティッシュ・アーティストといえば誰？
I started a band whilst at School when I was 14 called The In Crowd, we were heavily influenced by the whole Mod thing which is a very British phenomenon anyway but it was certainly bands such as The Jam and Dexys that inspired me to pick up an instrument, they made it feel like it was achievable.
14歳のとき初のバンド、ザ・イン・クラウドを結成しました。イギリスで大流行したモッズカルチャーに僕たちは強く影響されていたんです。けれども、楽器を弾いてみようとやる気をくれたのはザ・ジャムやデキシーズでした。僕たちにもなにか出来るんじゃないかと思えたんです。
Q.3 Can you tell us a little about how you came to form The Stone Foundation?
ストーン・ファンデーションを結成するまでの経緯を聞かせてください。
I was disillusioned with my band previous (Mandrake Root) and wanted to break free and make a change, I wanted to return to my roots and start a band that had a big dynamic, it had to be a seven piece group with horns and Hammond organ, that soul vibe, that’s what my real passion is but first I wanted to get someone who could really sing, I was very fortunate to Meet Neil (Jones) and we started writing songs together & planning the whole formation of Stone Foundation together, it took some time but it has been worth it.
ひとつ前のバンド（マンダラゲ・ルート）に不満を感じていて、解散してやりなおしたいと思っていました。自分の音楽の原点に戻りダイナミックなバンドを組みたかったんです。僕が理想としていたバンドの形態は７人のメンバー。トランペットなどの管楽器にハモンドオルガン……ソウルフルなヴァイブを持つ音楽こそが僕の求めていた音でした。でもまず始めにいい声のヴォーカリストが必要だった。だからニール・ジョーンズと出会えたことはすごくラッキーでした。僕たちは曲作りを始め、どんなグループにしたいかを一緒に決めていきました。時間はかかったけれど努力した甲斐があったと思います。
Q.4 The area of Britain you live in is relatively unknown to the Japanese. Can you let us know what places you would recommend Japanese travelers to visit and why?
君の住んでいるイギリスの地域は日本人にはあまり知られていないようだけれど、日本から訪れる人たちにお勧めの観光スポットを教えてください。
We live in the Midlands, I myself actually live in rural Warwickshire which is actually the very centre of England. We are surrounded by some truly beautiful places from the UK’s second City Birmingham which is seeing a real resurgence to Culturally important Towns such as Shakesspeares birthplace Stratford Upon Avon which is steeped in History and certainly worth visiting.
バンドのメンバーはみんなミッドランズ地方に住んでいます。僕の家はウォリックシャー州にあって、イングランドのど真ん中なんです。イギリスでも有数の美しい景観に恵まれ、近くには近年再開発されたイギリス第二の都市バーミンガムがあります。文豪シェイクスピアの故郷ストラトフォード・アポン・エイヴォンなどの文化的に重要な街もぜひ訪れてみてください。イギリスの歴史に浸れること間違いなしですよ。
Q.5 Moving away from music, the perception of British food in Japan is quite poor. Is this fair? What’s your favourite British food?
I think food in Britain is constantly evolving and tastes are becoming more and more eclectic as we as a nation embrace different cultures. I would imagine that to a tourist visiting Britain for the first time that our more traditional dishes of Pie & Mash, Fish & Chips and traditional Fried Breakfasts would be something of a novelty for them to try.
I actually adore Café Culture, they were the first places you could hang out as teenagers prior to pubs or clubs and listen to the latest releases on the Jukebox or play space Invaders and Pinball, we have a café in our little town of Atherstone called “Winnies” which has kept that charm and I still visit regularly and drink copious amounts of Tea and usually plump for Sausage, Chips and Beans with Bread & Butter…It doesn’t get more British than that.
イギリスの食べ物はどんどん美味しくなっていると思うし、イギリス人はいろいろな国の料理を喜んで受け入れるからバラエティも豊富です。イギリスに初めて滞在する人はトラディショナルなパイ＆マッシュ（ミートパイとマッシュポテト）やフィッシュ＆チップス、またはイングリッシュ・ブレックファストなど珍しいから試してみるんでしょうね。
僕が大好きなのはイギリス式のカフェ。パブやクラブにまだ出入りすることができないティーンエイジャーが集まってジュークボックスで最新の音楽を聴いたり、スペースインベイダー（ゲーム）やピンボールで遊ぶんです。僕の住む小さな街アセストンのウィニーズという名のカフェは昔ながらの趣きがあってよく行きます。たいていは紅茶を何杯も飲んで、ソーセージ＆チップス＆ビーンズ、それにバターたっぷりのトーストを注文します。最高のブリティッシュ料理ですよ。
