Its probably the smallest tailors shop in London, upon the walls are pictures of my tailoring forebears with the census documents and their regimental papers dating back to 1806..
ロンドンでおそらく一番小規模な紳士服の仕立て屋でしょうね。店内の壁中に先代の写真や家系にまつわる資料が飾られています。連隊の文書も古いもので1806年とか…。
It’s a history of London and tailoring all in one place.. and we are from Peckham Rye…which is the cockney rhyming slang for “tie”.
ロンドンと仕立て屋の歴史をひとつにまとめたような店です。店名の由来は私たちの出身地、南ロンドンのペッカム・ライから。それに『ペッカム・ライ』 はコックニー・スラングで「ネクタイ」（rye とtieが韻を踏んでいる）の意味があるんですよ。
Q.2 What inspired you both to enter the world of men’s fashion? Who did you look up to?
おふたりがメンズファッションの世界に進んだ動機を教えてください。憧れた人は誰でしたか？
As a family business, I’m the 6th generation, this world of tailoring and silks was always around me.. and when I come into the trade I apprenticed round the back of Savile Row in Coach & Horses Yard.
マーティン：先祖代々引き継がれ私は６代目です。ですから幼い頃から衣服の仕立やシルクの生地に囲まれていたんです。家業に携わるにあたって私はサヴィル・ロウ通り裏のコーチ＆ホーシス通りで修行を積みました。
I admire Tommy McCarthy, my great, great, great grandfather, he was the first tailor, sold by his own father at the age of 8 to the East India Co, where he reports to the Fort St.George Madras, from there he goes to the officers tailoring stores and finishes his apprenticeship at the age of 14 in the year 1813.. I think he must have been such a brave and very sturdy little chap… and very very good at his tailoring.
曾々々祖父（高祖父の父）であるトミー・マッカーシーをとても敬愛しています。たった８歳の彼は実父から強制的に東インド会社の軍隊に入隊させられ、マドラスのセント・ジョージ要塞に勤務しました。1813年、14歳のとき将校用の仕立屋で修行を終えました。とても勇気のあるたくましい奴だったに違いありません。仕立の腕前もかなりのものだったでしょう。
Q.3 Britain is often described as a ‘nation of fashion tribes’. Growing up, did you associate with any particular tribe? Does this still influence your work?
イギリスはたびたび「ファッション部族の国」と表現されますが、若い頃、特に感化されたファッションはありましたか？ 現在のあなたの作業にも影響されていると思いますか？
That’s a good way of putting it.. some of these tribes have become cults… as the years pass so their legend grows… I was a mod… and the influence of a well cut suit, Sean Connery as 007 and a good few others is omni present today…. For my own personal styling I like to cut and create looks that are elegant and very much West End…. Adding little details that are not immediately noticeable… I feel a suit should be like a work of art.. admired, studied and cared for.
なかなか的を得た良い表現ですね。部族のなかでもカルト的存在になったものもありますね。年月を重ねるにつれ伝説となり……私はモッズファッション、細身のスーツに夢中になりました。ショーン・コネリー演じるジェームズ・ボンドなどは普遍的です。自分用の服を仕立てるときは拡張高いウエスト・エンド風のスタイルを求めます。ぱっと見ではわからないような細かいディテールをあしらったり……。スーツはアート作品であるべきだと思うのです。好まれ、研究され、そして大切にされるべき。
Q.4 You have quite a A-list celebrity clientele – can you tell us who they are?
Yes we have a lot of people who are quite well known… unfortunately Im not able to tell you names.. our Savile Row background ensures we always maintain a level of confidence.
一流の芸能人や著名人があなたのお店によくいらっしゃるそうですね。
そうですね、有名な方がたくさん来てくださいますね。残念ながら名前は出せないのですが……サヴィル・ロウの老舗であることが、常に高い信頼性を保証しています。
Q.5 Your shop is located in the Newburgh Quarter of Carnaby Street. What do you like about this area of London and what shops and sites would you recommend to Japanese tourists
お店はカーナビー・ストリートのニューバラ・クォーターにありますが、どんな場所ですか？ また、日本の皆さんにおすすめのお店があれば教えてください。
Where we are located was the work room area of Savile Row, it moved from Maddox Street (where my forebears tailord for those on the Row) most probably at the turn of the century to here.. Its nice to be in an area that we know from the old days… its changed mind you and there are not the tailoring workrooms there once were… and we are a little reminder to that era..
Newburgh Street itself is very much a true Victorian cobbled stone street… not much has changed in 170 years.. is a very pretty little street.. and people do love to walk down it.
ここは一昔前はサヴィル・ロウの作業所が集まっていました。少し先のマドックス・ストリート（先代の仕事場もここにありました）から20世紀初頭にここ、ニューバラ・クォーターに移ったらしいですね。昔から馴染みのあるエリアにいるのは心地よいですよ。最近はここもずいぶん変わり、作業所はなくなってしまいましたけどね。この店はかつての様子を少し思い起こさせるかな…。
ニューバラ・ストリートは真のビクトリア時代を象徴する石畳の歩道で、170年間ほとんど変わっていません。とても素敵な小道なので、散歩をする人がたくさんいますよ。
I would certainly recommend all of Carnaby Street and its avenues and alleyways… so much to see and do.. have a good explore round, its all very well looked after as an area, the shop keepers are mostly independents and are always very friendly and happy to greet people from all over the world…
おすすめの店は…この辺り全部ですね！ 入り組んだ路地にいろいろな店が所狭しと並んでいますよ。見どころはたっぷりありますから、ぜひ探索してみてください。ほとんどがここだけにしかお店を持たないインディペンデントショップで、世界中からのお客さんを心待ちにしていますよ。フレンドリーな店員ばかりですから気軽に入ってみてください。
